Ukraine Imposes Electricity Restrictions on Businesses and Industries Following Russian Attacks on Energy Infrastructure

Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s national energy company responsible for managing the country’s electrical grid, announced on Tuesday (April 23) that it would enforce limitations on the supply of electricity to businesses and industries. This decision comes in response to electricity shortages caused by missile attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure by Russia.

In a statement on Telegram, Ukrenergo outlined that the restrictions on electricity supply would be effective from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. However, critical infrastructure and defense organizations would remain unaffected by these measures.

Additionally, the city of Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine will face continuous 24-hour restrictions on electricity supply to industrial sectors.

In eastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast, power outages have become widespread among households, leaving approximately 209,000 people without electricity.

Ukrenergo disclosed that for the second consecutive day, Ukraine has resorted to importing electricity from Europe to mitigate the energy deficit.

Last week, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal lamented that Ukraine had lost over 8 gigawatts of electricity capacity in recent months due to attacks by Russia.

Reports indicate that prior to the conflict with Russia, Ukraine’s electric power system boasted an installed capacity of over 50 GW. However, ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure have significantly undermined the country’s ability to meet its electricity demands, prompting urgent measures to address the situation.
