In 2023, India, ranking as the world’s third-largest oil importer, experienced a landmark deviation from its historical reliance on oil imports from Middle Eastern countries, a practice traditionally adopted to mitigate transportation costs.
For the first time, India’s crude oil imports from OPEC nations reached an all-time low in 2023, coinciding with a substantial surge in the import of more economical oil from Russia. This shift reflects a departure from the previous trend of predominantly relying on oil from neighboring Middle Eastern countries.
Throughout 2023, India’s average daily oil imports climbed to 4.65 million barrels, marking a 2% increase compared to the preceding year.
