Data from the Secretariat of Civil Aviation in Cambodia has revealed a staggering 180% year-on-year increase in air passenger traffic during the first eight months of 2023. The total number of passengers reached an impressive 3.4 million during this period.
The report further outlines that both international and domestic airlines collectively operated a total of 33,146 flights to Cambodia’s three international airports from January to August. This marked a remarkable 114% year-over-year increase in flight operations.
Sin Chanseree Wuttha, Spokesperson and Permanent Secretary of the Office, expressed optimism about Cambodia’s aviation industry. Speaking to Xinhua news agency, he anticipates that the number of air passengers for the entire year is projected to reach approximately 4.6 million. This would signify a twofold increase from the 2.38 million passengers recorded in 2022. Notably, China’s early reopening this year has played a pivotal role in revitalizing the aviation sector.
While passenger numbers have soared, Cambodia’s air cargo volume in the first eight months experienced a 10% decline, amounting to a total of 34,881 tonnes. Despite this dip in cargo volume, the remarkable growth in passenger traffic bodes well for Cambodia’s aviation industry, underscoring the country’s renewed prominence on the international air travel map.
