Kia Announces Plans to Establish Electric Vehicle Factory in Thailand, Anticipated Agreement with Government This Year

Kia Corp., a prominent South Korean automobile manufacturer, has unveiled ambitious plans to construct an automotive factory in Thailand with an annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles.

This upcoming plant signifies a significant milestone for Kia as it will mark the company’s inaugural automobile production facility within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Thailand, the chosen location, will become Kia’s sixth overseas production hub, joining an illustrious list that includes the United States, China, India, Slovakia, and Mexico.

Notably, this venture in Thailand represents Kia’s first foray into overseas auto manufacturing in four years, following the establishment of a factory in India back in 2019.

Anticipation is mounting as industry observers expect Kia to finalize an agreement with the Thai government to proceed with the construction of the automobile factory later this year. The groundbreaking for the facility is scheduled to commence in the first half of 2024. Kia’s primary objective is to facilitate the production of its renowned EV6 model within Thailand, which stands as the company’s flagship electric vehicle. This strategic move aligns perfectly with Thailand’s overarching policy to promote and support the production of electric vehicles within its borders.

Kia’s decision to set up operations in Thailand underscores the increasing global importance of electric vehicles and the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in a region poised for growth. The move also highlights Kia’s dedication to meeting the rising demand for electric vehicles in Southeast Asia and contributing to the region’s sustainable mobility landscape.
