Sri Lanka’s Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment announced that the Saudi government has agreed to import 200,000 workers from Sri Lanka this year, a significant increase from the 54,000 imported last year.
More than 300,000 Sri Lankans are currently working overseas, with the majority in the Middle East. Remittances from overseas workers are a crucial source of income for Sri Lanka, with a total worth of about $3.8 billion last year.
The increase in the number of Sri Lankan workers being imported to Saudi Arabia is expected to provide more job opportunities for Sri Lankans and boost the country’s economy through increased remittances. The move is also in line with Saudi Arabia’s efforts to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on oil exports.
This announcement is expected to have a positive impact on the Sri Lankan economy and the Sri Lankan workers who are looking for job opportunities abroad.
