India lifts rice export ban after easing rice shortage concerns

India’s Department of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said Tuesday that the Indian government has lifted a ban on the export of organic non-basmati rice, including broken rice, imposed nearly three months ago.

The lifting of the rice export ban comes after concerns about a rice shortage subsided.

In early September, Indian authorities banned exports of rice to ensure adequate supplies for the country after it was determined that total rice acreage could decline compared to last year. This would result in less rice being produced during the winter season this year, leaving the country’s rice supply inadequate.
