GfK: German consumer climate remains strongly negative in December

Market research firm GfK reported yesterday (Nov. 25) that the consumer climate in Germany is expected to change slightly in December, after government measures to save energy helped stabilize confidence and lift it above the record low of two months ago. But it still signals that consumption is declining.

The index for consumer climate in Germany rose to -40.2 in December from -41.9 in November but was below analysts’ expectations of -39.6.

October’s reading of -42.8 was the lowest in more than a decade, and the negative number indicates a year-over-year decline in personal consumption.
