South Korea’s rice production falls 3% this year due to bad weather

According to the National Bureau of Statistics of South Korea, this year’s rice production in South Korea was 3,764,000 tons, down 3% from last year due to bad weather.

South Korean rice production reportedly declined after rising 10.7% in 2021, following five consecutive years of decline between 2016 and 2020.

The statistics office said the decline in rice production was due to the lack of sunshine and rainfall. In addition, the size of rice fields across the country decreased by 0.7% year-on-year to 727,054 hectares this year. As a result, rice production also decreased.

South Korean rice production per 10 hectares decreased by 2.3% year-on-year to 518 kilograms in 2022.

Rice consumption in South Korea has declined in recent decades due to changes in consumption patterns.
