Sony plans to build a chip factory in Thailand providing 2,000 jobs

According to the Asian news agency Nikkei, the Sony Group will build a semiconductor chip factory in Thailand to reduce production costs and streamline the supply chain by spreading production sites more widely around the world.

Sony Semiconductor Solutions, a subsidiary of Sony The Group will invest about 10 billion yen ($70.7 million) to construct new buildings in central Thailand. The plant will begin operations in the fiscal year ending March 2025.

The new plant will produce image sensors used by some self-driving cars to locate pedestrians and obstacles. When construction is complete, Sony’s production capacity in Thailand will increase by 70%, and products from the plant will be exported worldwide.

The company will also hire 2,000 employees for the plant.
