Initial jobless claims rose 3,000 last week to 217,000, the Labor Department said.
The number of people claiming jobless benefits was below analysts’ estimates of 223,000.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that the number of Americans continuing to file for unemployment benefits rose by 55,000 to 1.44 million.
