Indonesia to develop tin industry and ban exports

The Ministry of Mines told an industry forum Wednesday that Indonesian officials are processing data and assessing current conditions in the industry in preparation for a tin export ban.

Ridwan Djamaludin said authorities were trying to estimate how much time Indonesia would need to develop an industry that could take up tin ingot production if the government decided to stop exports.

President Joko Widodo has added tin to the list of metals he wants to stop exporting in order to encourage investment in the development of downstream industries.

Indonesia consumes only 5% of its tin production and needs an industry that can process the metal when producers are not allowed to export it.
