According to China’s customs authority, China imported more coal from Russia in August than in July, reaching at least its highest level in five years. China is seeking overseas power suppliers to meet peak demand during extreme heat.
According to the report, China imported 8.54 million tons of Russian coal in August. This was an increase from the previous high of 7.42 million tons in July.
The latest monthly figures for Russian coal imports are the highest since the comparative statistics in 2017.
China’s Russian coal imports have surged in recent months as Europe has suspended purchases of Russian coal.
