The U.S. reported fewer initial jobless claims than expected last week

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that initial jobless claims fell by 6,000 last week to 222,000. That was the lowest level in three months and below the 240,000 that analysts had expected.

Jobless claims are above 215,000, the weekly average before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of Americans continuing to file for unemployment benefits increased by 36,000 to 1.47 million.
