India’s coal demand increases, while China’s drops

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), domestic coal demand in India is expected to increase by 7% for the full year from early 2022 as the country’s economy grows and electricity consumption increases.

In contrast, coal consumption in China is expected to have fallen by 3% in the first half of 2022. COVID shutdowns in several cities have slowed economic expansion. However, it is expected that an anticipated increase in the second half of the year will bring coal consumption for the year as a whole back to the level of the previous year.

China and India combined consume double the amount of coal as the rest of the world, while China accounts for more than half of global demand alone.
