Economic Confidence in the Eurozone Fell Sharply in March

The European Commission (EC), the executive body of the European Union (EU), said its economic confidence index for the eurozone fell from 113.9 in February to 108.5 in March.

Eurozone consumer confidence fell to a record low of -18.7 in March from -8.8 in February, while industrial sentiment declined to 10.4 from 14.1.

In addition, retail confidence fell to 0.2 in March from 5.5 in February.

Meanwhile, European stocks opened lower today. The STOXX 600 index fell after three consecutive days of gains on hopes of peace talks between Russia and Russia and Ukraine.

Roche shares fell 1.3% after the company said results from its lung cancer trials failed to meet late-stage targets.

  • The STOXX 50 closed at 3,959.14 points, down 43.04 points, or -1.08%.
  • The German stock market DAX closed at 14,606.05 down 214.28, or -1.45%.
  • The French stock market CAC-40 closed today at 6,741.59, down 50.57, or -0.74%.
