The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) released by the U.S. Department of Labor shows that the number of job openings fell by 185,000 this month to 11.263 million.
The Labor Department revised the number of job openings in December to 11.448 million from 10.925 million.
The job vacancy rate was 7.0% in January, down from 7.1% in December.
Employment increased to 6.5 million, and the employment rate was 4.3%.
The number of voluntary resignations decreased by 151,000 to 4.3 million, while the rate of voluntary resignations fell to 2.8%.
The JOLTS number is a focus of the Federal Reserve (Fed) as a measure of tightness in the labor market.
